Abstract
This study evaluated the effectiveness of microfinance institutions (MFIs) in enhancing financial inclusion and economic empowerment in Lusaka's Chibolya Township (Zambia Statistics Agency 2024). A mixed-methods approach was adopted, integrating structured questionnaires administered to 150 micro-entrepreneurs with semi-structured interviews conducted with 20 participants comprising 15 micro-entrepreneurs and 5 MFI staff. The study revealed that 83% of respondents were aware of MFIs operating in their community, while only 59% had actually accessed services, indicating a significant gap between awareness and access, (Zambia Statistics Agency 2024). Among those who accessed services, loans dominated at 37%, savings at 29%, and financial literacy training at 16%. Regarding economic empowerment, 60% reported improved business performance, 59% reported income increases, and 67% experienced improved savings capacity (Bank of Zambia 2023). However, 73% found interest rates unaffordable and 53% found loan repayment terms unmanageable. On financial inclusion, 61% held a formal bank or mobile money account and 56% credited MFIs with facilitating their access to formal financial services. Inferential analysis using Chi-square tests at the 0.05 significance level found no statistically significant relationships between demographic or business characteristics and MFI access or income improvement outcomes, suggesting that microfinance benefits are relatively equitable across gender, education, business type, and years in operation. Overall, 55% rated MFIs as effective. Qualitative findings corroborated these results, highlighting that long-term users who combined loans with financial literacy training reported the most significant benefits (United Nations Capital Development Fund Zambia 2023). The study recommends reducing interest rates, simplifying loan procedures, introducing flexible repayment terms, and expanding financial literacy training to improve MFI effectiveness in Chibolya Township
